Meet Mauro González. He is one of our sponsored athletes, and at 21 years old he is a rider in the Spanish Superbike Championship in the Supersport 600 category. We hope you like this interview where we can learn about her facet as an athlete and her most personal side.

  • Tell us about the most important titles you have won both on a sporting and personal level.

The most important titles I have achieved at a sporting level are my three Spanish championships won in 2016, 2019 and 2020, also accompanied by my runner-up in Spain in 2021.

And on a personal level, for me a great achievement has been to combine my studies with elite competition until I finished high school and something that has been a challenge for me in recent years has been to get up from every injury I have had and come back stronger than before.

  • When did you start to be interested in two wheels and when did you try the competition?

My relationship with this sport was not at all early since normally riders usually start at 3 to 5 years old while I started riding a motorcycle when I was 11 years old.

I started with the competition very quickly because, due to my age, I had a quick adaptation to the sport and I was able to start competing early.

  • In which sports have you competed?

I started like any rider competing in minibikes, but due to my age, height and weight, I didn’t have very good results.

The next step was minispeed, where in my first year competing at the national level (2016) I was able to be Spanish champion of Minigp220.

In the transition to the speed circuits I had two very difficult years (2017 and 2018), where in two heavy falls I fractured my pelvis and humerus respectively. This took me away from my preferred modality since due to the lack of results we had practically no help and we did not reach any budget to continue running at speed.

This made me discover a modality to which I adapted from the first minute and which made me develop many skills and perfect my strengths such as my braking.

I managed to be champion of Spain in my rookie year (2019) as the youngest rider on the grid, after proving my level with poles, track records and many victories.

This result meant that in 2020 I was lucky enough to be able to return to the ESBK (Spanish Superbike Championship). Year in which I combined it with the Spanish Supermotard Championship, revalidating my title of champion and getting the runner-up of Spain in the Yamaha Blu Cru.

Already in 2021 I made the jump to the Stock 600 category where I also got a quick adaptation and was runner-up in my first year, but in the jump to Supersport 600 (same bikes but with more prepared engines) in 2022 I had a collarbone injury.

Thanks to CRD physiotherapy I was able to recover in just 12 days between the operation and the race, but I was a little weighed down by a not very good mental condition.

I worked a lot during the following year on my psychological condition and in mid-2023 I had a change of team, I got back on the podium and I was once again among the fastest riders, which made me have a plus of confidence in myself and the results came by themselves.

This 2024 is being very positive in which after 10 races I have achieved 8 podiums and a victory, my worst result of the year being a fourth. This puts me with 4 races to go as a candidate for the title.

  • What other sports do you like?

I am a great lover of sports and the truth is that I cannot sit still, apart from my daily preparation (motorcycle training, strength and running) I really like to play paddle tennis, tennis, golf… It is very good for me to disconnect.

  • Tell us something about your supports.

My family has always been my fundamental support. Due to the economic difficulty of my sport, my parents have been very sacrificed in recent years, working day and night for and to help me achieve my dreams.

As for my sponsors, I will always be grateful to them because without them it would be very difficult to continue competing and year after year they continue to trust me by doing their bit.

  • Please talk to us about training.

I currently train practically every day of the week, alternating motorcycle, strength and running.

I give more importance to endurance/aerobic training (running) since it is what has worked best for me so far, doing 3 days of running and 1 high intensity with series.

As for my strength training, I do fullbody 2 times a week to make the most of these two days of strength.

On budget I can only train the bike 1 to 2 days a week, although to work my forearms, which are the muscles that are most fatigued on the bike, on the days that I train endurance (running) I also do a race simulation using a blood flow restriction technique in the arms while simulating the movements of the bike watching an onboard video of the next circuit where I race.

Psychologically I have also worked a lot, since in high-level sport the head influences everything. Above all, I have worked on enhancing my self-confidence, which was low some time ago but over time I have managed to create superior self-confidence.

  • Do you organize your training programs yourself?

I’m lucky that for a couple of years I’ve been working with David Martín-Caro, who gives me a lot of energy and adapts my training to face all my challenges 100%.

  • Give us the general features of your diet.

I currently take care of my diet to the millimeter with Raquel’s help. Due to my high intensity in training during the week I am very demanding with my nutrition to always be able to give my 100% and have good recoveries. Apart from counting my macros and weighing my food daily, I also supplement my diet daily with creatine, salt pills, magnesium bisglycinate…

  • How important is rest?

My greatest luck in my recovery is having David on hand. Every day that I feel burdened or have some discomfort he takes some time out of his free time to treat me. It has also instilled in me a routine of mobility and daily stretching that I didn’t give importance to before, but they make me recover much faster. I also have a massage gun and a pointer at home with which I give myself a general review before going to bed.

  • Is it difficult to combine training, rest and nutrition with the life of a young person of your age?

Well, the truth is that I think I’m lucky to be able to dedicate practically 100% of my time to preparing to be a better rider and this makes me work harder every day than the previous one and it doesn’t mean any weight for me to combine these things.

  • From what level can you live professionally as a competition driver?

Motorcycling is one of the most expensive sports and living professionally as a rider is very difficult. Until you reach a certain recognition you need a lot of help from sponsors. As for subsidies they practically do not exist, this year I have won several races of the Spanish Superbike Championship, I have made pole positions and the most I have received has been a sad prize…

It is very difficult to make a living from this sport, but thanks to my results and sponsors we have many options to, in the coming years, be able to make a living from it.

  • What advice can you give to those who dream of competing in motorcycling?

That they work day by day, constantly improve themselves and never lose faith in themselves.

  • Outside of sport, what things are you passionate about?

As I said earlier I am a sports fan and most of my free time I play padel, but I also really enjoy spending time with my family.

I really like animals and I currently have a dog that is like one of the family.

  • What are your next sports projects?

This year I am fighting to be ESBK champion in the Supersport category and thanks to my results we have many teams behind us for next year with offers for many categories and championships. My biggest dream will always be to be world champion and I will continue to fight day by day to be closer to it.

Thank you very much Mauro González for allowing us to get to know you a little more.
